Hi All
In the eary 1920s many watch companies, were trying to make a waterproof
watch.Swiss case maker Frances Baumgartner made cases based on a patent
by Borgel The idea was sealing the case by taking the middle part and theading it on both sides, rotating in opposite directions. The movement and dial then were fited
within a rubber ring that screwed into the caseframe. However the Borgel based
cases did not seal well at the stem.To solve this two Swiss watchmakers in La Chax
de-Fonds Paul Perregaux and Georges Peret applied for a Swiss patent in 1925
for a screwed twinlock stem system.Hans Wilsdorf of Rolex grasped that a hermetically sealed case with careful fitting of crystal and the twinlock stem system would produce a waterproof watch.Hans Wilsdorf of Rolex negotiated to have the Paul Perregaux patent assigned to him.Hans Wilsdorf of Rolex obtained a
British patent on October 18 1926.Then in 1927 Mercedes Gleitze swam the English
Channel with a Rolex Oyster on her wrist for the entire 15hrs 15 Min swim. And thats
when the Rolex Oyster was born.
My own Paul Perregaux watch silver hallmark on case dates to 1926
