Case difference between SS and WG Daytona

Just got a black face SS Daytona and never realized their was so much difference between the case of the WG and SS Daytona.

The lugs on the WG are really squared off and bigger the guards around the pushers and crown are much bigger and the case seems thicker as does the bezel.

Is this anything to do with the material used to make each case or just a design decision by Rolex to differentiate between the models.

Does anyone know if the SS will change to the same case with time?

Boy, you've got sharp eyes! You are quite right; interestingly the yellow gold Daytonas are the same as the SS models (or so it would appear from my Rolex catalogue).
