After much deliberation, to'ing and fro'ing I've gone and done it and bought my first 18k YG rolex...a GMTIIC!! I originally had intended to get a gold sub (the older style ones) and tried on a few but something didn't feel right. Then tried a GMTIIC and that was it, just felt 100% perfect. Budget has been stretched a bit but I'm getting a newer watch with all the improvements such as maxi dial, clasp, ceramic bezel, etc. It's getting delivered on Wednesday and I can't wait!
Now is there any extra care required for an 18k watch compared to SS? I know gold is softer than SS but apart from that I'm clueless.
Cheers
Mike
P.S will post pics as soon as watch arrives
Congrats and looking forward to pictures. Gold scratches easier than SS.
congratulations, Awesome watch. can't wait for the pics.

Very nice choice.

Anniversay (green) dial or black? Both are great IMO.
Fantastic choice . Had mine for several months. (Black dial) Wear it every day. Best watch Rolex ever made.
You will love it!

Getting the black dial model and also plan to wear it everyday. I plan on selling My current SS trio for this watch. Hopefully I'll be ok as a one watch man! If not thinking about getting a cheap Sub ND.
Good move IMO. The 116718 is a great looking watch!

Don't worry about only having one watch. The watch you will have is the best Rolex have made.
I have 5 other watches and they don't get much wrist time.

:)
Well done, michael!
I prefer Subs but in a choice between the older Sub and the newer GMT, I'd have done the same as you.
That's a great watch - looking forward to the pics! :)

In an ideal world I would have gone for the new gold ceramic subs, but I have to draw the line somewhere in terms of budget and the new subs are just out of reach. Anyway, i'm not exactly going to be hard done by with the GMT. I've had both the SS & TT versions of it and missed them both when I've sold them. Only a few more days waiting...
Don't understand why people prefer the sub.
The extra complication of the GMT hand is so useful, most people travel (at least a bit) most people don't dive at all. I certainly don't!

Comparing prev. generation Subs and GMTs, I always felt the smaller crown of the GMT to be a bit of a turn-off. That, of course, was remedied in the new gen GMT.
But I still prefer the Sub as it appears less cluttered, particularly the bezel and the different fonts.
But, hey...let's be serious here - if I was in the fortunate position, as you are and michael will be in a few days, to be strapping on an 18k GMT then I'm damn sure I'd get over my "clutter issue" LOL! :)
See your point about the fonts Harb.
But I do find that GMT hand so usefull. I spend a lot of time in the far east and it is so usefull, to glance at my watch and know instantly if it is appropriate to make a phone call to the UK. We can all keep in mind the hour difference. With the GMT you can see at a glance if it is lunch time in uK and many other subtleties, which would have you thinking without it.
Totally converted GMT person :-)
I like both the new sub and the new gmt.

In real world, practical terms, no...not really.
By which I presume that you won't be using this watch whilst rock-climbing/car mechanics/building demolition or other such activities etc etc etc...
TBH, though, even if you did use it for the above activities and you were in a situation where you might seriously damage your watch then I'd probably be more worried about the limb the watch was attached to...
So...to recap, stick it on and enjoy it!
(ps - did I say you were a lucky so and so! :))

I do not dive or have the need to know a second timezone, I just like them both from a mechanical and engineering point. I do prefer the sub though as Harb has said it is a cleaner look, but I do really love the GMT and don't feel like I'm settling for second best with it...it's an 18k Rolex after all!
I'm pretty good at looking after my watches so hopefully it won't pick up a million scratches in the first week.
And yes Harb, I really am a lucky so and so!

Good for you..
I'm not much for old watches..However, I do b elieve that the GMT is the most versatile watch in the Rolex line-up........

I'd initially actually typed the famous Monty Python phrase "you lucky lucky b*$***d" but decided to edit that...LOL!! :):)

Gold watches, perchance...?
