View Full Version : Modifying an Exp I

OK...since I've recently shown some inclination towards various modified Rolexes some of you may be thinking I've been at the laughing gas, but bear with me...;)

I've recently got a Milgauss GV and love the polished parts of the case, bezel and bracelet.

Which got me thinking...

My wife has an Explorer...would it look as good if the bracelet centre-links were polished? Sure, the case is all brushed, but the bezel is polished. It might give the watch a little extra "pop"...

My wife thinks I'm nuts and she's happy the way it is.
What do you guys think?

A reasonable idea?
Or do I hear the sound of the firing squad cocking their weapons...? ;)

Errm....o-kayy....but "me likes" what, exactly?
Standard, or modified?

Or the idea of me in front of a firing squad? :p

As much as I think you're right about shiny bits, I don't think you should alter the band. A better suggestion would be to go to your local AD and purchase your wife her own Milgauss. It doesn't have to be the GV, and even better, you two can be sporting his and hers watches.

Marc, you're killing me here! :)

Actually, 40mm is too big for her - and she'll be the first to admit that. She's tried all my watches and the Subs, Daytona and GV are just too oversized. 36mm is just right for her - has the "larger watch" look but doesn't look silly on her petite arm.

It's funny you mention his'n'her watches - the GV and Exp do look superficially similar (OK...not to TURFers, sure...!)
That's sort of where my thoughts about polishing the band came from.

Sure, go ahead and have the center (why do you always misspell this word?) links polished. You only live once (or so my non-Hindu friends tell me). And think about how cool it will be when that famous Scottish sunshine reflects off the polished parts, once or twice a year. :) :)

LOL! Very funny, geoff! :)

Well, that's a +1 for polishing I can take back to Sim - it's her watch so the final decision is hers (though you can bet I'll be trying my best to persuade her...;))

As it's not your watch - I say polish it and show us all :)

You should have bought her the DJ I was selling recently as that's 36mm with PCL, and the latest solid links, clasp etc. It may well be that that bracelet would also fit the Exp.

I certainly think that it would be worth a go - it would make the watch less toolish and more dressy. IMO it will look pretty good. Polish the centre of he fliplock too, it'll be a bit like a YM.

Go ahead and polish. You can always have it brushed again if she screams too loudly. Show us pics.

It's funny you mention his'n'her watches...

Aha, I see where you are coming from.

To complement this idea, just for you two "love birds"...

Grrr...I know, Alun! I shouldn't have listened to her!

Unfortunately the pic doesn't show, Nick...but clicking on its "properties" gave me this link http://aranknitwear.tayads.com/img/HH2076.jpg so I know where you're coming from...LOL!! :)

I know it's a little twee, but we once had his'n'her Submariners. My 16800 didn't get any wrist-time when I got my LV and went to another home and Sim doesn't wear hers anymore as it feels too small:

Looks like lots more in favour of polishing.
I'll investigate further...

Sorry about the pic... comes up fine for me. Glad that you found the link tho' LOL.

Actually, I have to hold my hand up about certain his'n'hers purchases over the years - we were young once too :) :)

Well, I've made the call - "Not a problem, Sir!"
So...off to the watchmaker on Thurday or Friday...

I'd better tell Simran...;)

I have no doubt that it will look beautiful, especially as Simran will be wearing it, but don't you feel that you are taking a classic Rolex and making it look like a Seiko?

I say this as a friend not as a joker.

Fear not, Roz, for I always know your comments are well-meant.

I still think the watch will be entirely recognisable as a Rolex and, as the modifications are in keeping with the changes Rolex themselves are making to various models, I don't think the bastardisation quotient is obnoxiously high (!)

These thoughts only came to me after wearing my MG GV - keep the same case but change the dial to a 3-6-9 and you've got the new generation 40mm Exp I...
I wonder if Rolex would keep it all brushed, though...

Your wife has something she likes the way it is and you're going to muck with it? :)

You are a brave man.

Can't wait to see it!
