Hi,

My thoughts are turning towards a vintage Sub. If I was to look for a model specifically from 1968, what would be the model number I should be looking for? How would I identify the precise year of manufacture?

Cheers,

Stephen

A Submariner from 1968 without a date would be model number 5513 and with a date model 1680. Its serial numbers should be between 2,426000 and 2,688999 if certain watch web sites are to be believed. Different sites give different serial number information to date watches. You could call your nearest Rolex service centre to find out what range of serial numbers the watch should fall within.

Stephen - have a look here (http://www.newturfers.com/vb/showthread.php?t=203&highlight=5513)to see examples of the 5513 and here for the 1680 you'd be looking at the very gorgeous Red Submariner (http://www.newturfers.com/vb/showthread.php?t=183&highlight=1680)

Hi,

My '69 5513 has a serial of 1805xxx... the only true way of knowing the year is by looking inside the caseback. I forgot to ask when it was serviced a few years ago.

Thanks info, and the link fellas, the collector in me quite likes the idea of trying to hunt down a '68 Rolex, I suspect my Bank Manager may be less happy (but hey .... whats he done for me lately:) ). So I don't bore you with al these questions can anyone the best reference book for Rolex that helps with id's and dating? I want to do as much research as I can before taking a fairly hefty plunge.

Cheers,

Stephen

Absolutely correct. Forgot about the 5512.

Never see a 1680 from 1968, the earliest seen are 1969 like mine :-)

According to redwatches.com (http://www.redwatches.com/page7.html), the Red Sub was produced between 1966-73 (although with some possible discrepancies regarding the end date)

This is right, but there was never seen one.....and I really know a lot of european rolex collectors and passionados.....

.....but it would be fantastic, if somebody could show us a 1680 from 67 or 68..... :)

general concensus has been suggested in actual fact 69 is probably the earliest maybe 68 at a push.

your going to find it easiest to get a 5513 or a rarer 5512 (like the one i'm wearing right now :) )

Post count fixed ;)

As regards data from the old forum, we're still working out if it can be migrated over or if we'll keep it as a searchable archive.
