View Full Version : New Rolex at AD is 9 Years Old! -- Stay Away?

I have an offer for a new P series ladies Datejust from my AD. They obviously were unable to move it for a very long time. It is new never sold and has the warranty etc. Rolex authorized them to put it in their estate case and discount it 30% - but again with all rights and privileges of a new watch. I was considering it for my wife before I realized just how old it really is.

My thoughts:

MSRP has gone up more than 30% in that timeframe so it is actually higher than that very exact watch was when they placed it in the case -- i.e. they paid WAY less than they would for a V serial number should I choose one of those.

The lubricants could have migrated or dried as the watch is almost old enough for it's second service let alone the first.

Anyway, it's an unusual situation or perhaps even opportunity. I thought I'd ask the hive. What do you think of it? This for a down to earth hard working mom of 4. I figure not too glitzy, no polished center links, good lum (hopefully --- would 9 years have the new style lum wear out)..?

BTW - Some have suggested based on the dial that it may not be 9 years old. Anyone know?

Hi r0gue!

First, that watch you have pictured is a Oyster Date, not a Datejust - the only difference, however, is that the Date comes only in SS whereas the DJ comes in all the other metal combinations (that is for Ladies sized watches at 26mm; the Mens Date is 34mm)

The lume will fine as it is Luminova which doesn't degrade.

If your wife likes it, then I'd go for it - but make sure the dealer gets it fully Rolex serviced as part of the deal.

Current Ladies Oyster have a new case and bracelet design. I hope they are not "discounting" the current list on the OLD model.....

They should be discounting it from original MSRP.

Well that's just it. This dealer ups the price with every increase on his stock. So indeed, the price on this p serial number watch is ($4300ish --- or something of that sort). So the 30% off is probably about what it was when it was brought into the shop.

That said, where else will you get a basically new (albeit case wear from going in and out for about a decade) Rolex with the two year guarantee -- all for $3060.

I'm torn. Part of me wants to hold off. I had planned to pop this on her for Mothers day (she gave me 4 beautiful kids), but prior to finding this deal, I had intended to get her a brandy new one for our 15th anniversary in October. So I could just hold off, dump another grand or two, and come back with a brand new one.

BUT - I like the utilitarian nature of this one. The brushed links all steel disig with good sized lum would be great for her. She is a hard working mother.

Any idea how old this watch really is? The case would indicate 2000, but others on some forums suggested that the dial is more recent and thus it may have been more recent?

2000-2001 sounds about right. Im pretty sure that dial has been in the program for a while.

Regd. watches as gifts for women - all I can say is - don't do it! Unless you are absolutely sure what they want. (as in "I WANT THAT ONE" - OK -).

I would not buy the above watch for 3k US$.

Agree with Morgan, it's not worth $3K. For its age you have to factor in the cost of service.

I was planning to call the RSC and get them to agree to look at / service / at least lube it prior to buying it. I am thinking they will. But I need to give that a call I suppose to make sure.

With a fresh trip to the RSC, is it worth it then?

NO. It is basically pre-owned now as far as I am concerned. offer them 2k. If you really want that particular watch go up maybe another hundred if they try to haggle. They will have a hard time selling that watch considering they have not sold it for over 9 years. Just be prepared to walk away and you will most likely get that watch for 2100.

Wow! I don't know how you guys get deals like that. I've haggled with the ADs around here for deals and have never come close.. I don't think I could get them to $3000. Although perhaps the problem is me. Maybe I should get a little more aggressive and more willing to walk away.

I wrote a clear e-mail to him with my reasoning, requesting a price adjustment. They came back with $2890. That will work for me.

I like staying with my local AD. Although I wish they would steam the links prior to putting the screwdriver to them. I am worried they will bugger a screw due to the locktight. I may just order a set of precision drivers and a steamer and do my own.

I'm happy to be getting my wife a wonderful timepiece. I'm happy it is all brushed so she can wear it without so much care for the polished links. I'm happy it is not too dressy for jeans, but will look nice at a fine restaurant.

A mom of 4, she's certainly earned this awesome Mothers Day gift! We are finally as of this year in a place where I can treat her. Pics to come next Sunday!

It shows some very small marks from wandering around the case for 9 years. But I'll be sending it back for a relube (pre-authorized by Rolex). I'm certain they'll buff it up a bit if I ask them to.

I'm so pleased. I'm so happy to be doing something nice for my wife. I really don't do so often enough. She's the best!
