Following hot on the heels of the relative that died the other month, my last grandparent died today, after a pretty short illness. :( He was 88 and, until fairly recently, had led a pretty active life. I'd certainly never thought of him as someone in their 80s.
He'd had a hard life in an orphanage in Canada as a child, fought in the Canadian army during WWII and moved to the UK in the late 1940s / early '50s. He'll be sorely missed by myself and my children, but especially my mum, who, now, only has her children and their families left. :(
My grandfather had missed his wife since she died several years ago. At least now they can be together again.

Thanks folks. Turns out, I'm named as an executor for his Will, so more fun to come! As an old soldier from the Canadian Army, we're going to have the flag, etc... for his funeral. I suspect some of his old commrades might be there, too.
It was so weird going to his house today, to start sorting things out. I know that there will be some major family issues, due to his son and the way things have been split, etc... Still, until we get the probate sorted, not alot can happen.
My condolences to you and your family, Chris.
Take care, mate.

Well, as an executor for the estate, I've been going through some old papers, etc... It's been fascinating. I've found clippings from newspapers from the Second World War, including a report of the Vatican being bombed and an Italian newspaper about talks held between Hitler, Mussolini and Goebbels. I've also found postcards from the ships he sailed on when coming to live in the UK from Canada, a letter to a great grandfather thanking him for his service in the Great European War, etc...
So, although a very sad time and duty, it's been enlightening and intersting, too. :)
