View Full Version : Definitive beater
Lots of talk of beaters around here.
IMO This has to be the definitive beater of all time.
Why?
1 It is gorgeous, both on a great alli strap or on metal bracelet
2 It has chrono and date, and rotating bezel for other timezone
3 It has a brilliandt , easy to read dial, with full anti reflect.
4 It is virtually indestructible, I have tried.
5 It has , probably, one of the most important movements of the 20th centuary, and unlike the Daytona version, runs at full speed.
6 And here is the killer. You can pick one up (if you look around a bit) for around £1000. which for one of the all time great watches , is crazy.

nice but I would feel bad beating it. It is not as inviting as a Luminox or a Seiko Monsters.

I really don't get this beater thing. Why would anyone buy an expensive watch only to try to smash it?

Well, not my idea of a beater, but glad to see you haven't quite got the better of it yet :D

Who wants to buy an expensive watch to smash it?
Harbester will elaborate more in what "beater" really means as his mastering of the English language is only second to Oblomov“s.

We all encounter circumstances, which are not ideal environments for our beloved and often delicate watches. Because we love watches, we don't, under such circumstances, want to wear our often delicate and most prized watches. Neither do we want to wear something really awful.
Therefore it is nice to have in our collection, something very hardy and resistant to such circumstances. Something perhaps less valuable in monetery terms, so that in the event of a failure in the hardy department, it will not cause such a moral or economic disaster.
I will not, for example, re-tile my bathroom, wearing either of my JLCs or any Rolex or GP. My faithful old beater Zenith however, will relish such an operation. Not that I am ever likely to re-tile my bathroom, it must be said.

Okey-dokey. I just take the watch off and put it somewhere safe before I embark on a dangerous project. Probably the only times I do this is when I'm washing-up*, as I don't want to bang it against pots & pans, lurking beneath the suds, and I read somewhere that detergent is not very good for rubber seals.
*what an exciting life I have.
P.S. I'm very jealous of your collection, even the beater, but especially the JLC.

I don't engage in any dangerous projects either. It is just an excuse to own another watch:)

I had my suspicions! It's a great excuse, and I wish I'd thought of it.

Fer has a watch he wears as a beater, or was that whilst he's beating! ;)

This is what I wear daily in rotation with the Yacht-Master.

Call it a beater if you like. I replaced the crystal with an internal AR sapphire, a triple lock crown and a bead blasting and relume.
When I am going into harm's way (auto repair, bad part of town, etc.) this is what I wear.

Truely a beater. Same movement as the Monster, military dial and 36mm. I replaced the bracelet with a super oyster that was glass bead blasted by Duarte. Couldn't believe it when it came up for sale - $50 shipped! I also replaced the white day/date wheels with the black ones from a Monster, IMO the white wheels looked cheap and the black ties it together. So, all-in-all I'm into it under $175 and it keeps excellent time and looks good doing it. If it gets beat - so be it.
They both look great and represent good value
Interesting definition of a beater!
In that case, I'd say my TT Sub could qualify as I beat the hell out of that watch during the decade it was my one and only.
However, the definition of a beater that most people use applies to a watch that is relatively cheap and that one wouldn't necessarily mind if it were damaged or destroyed during an activity.
Tim, I suspect you'd mind if that unfortunate circumstance befell your Zenith. I mean, you've used the word "faithful" to describe an inanimate collection of mechanics, so I you must have some sentimental feelings towards it...

True, but i couldn't wear a watch I didn't love. A watch that has endured adversity with you and survived, will certainly hold a high place in your esteem.
To wear something that is completely disposable, would be going against every reason I have for wearing a watch in the first place.
The Zenith takes the role of Soldier of my collection, if there is front line action, the Zenith is up for it, carries a few scars as a result, but always marches home in one piece. But I have no place for cannon fodder.
(I have just re-read what I have written. Please don't tell the men in the white coats, I don't think they read this, do they?)

Perhaps, it's just never cheated on him! :) Let's face it, we see those floozy Rolex watches jumping wrist without a moment's hesitation! (just look at the photos from Turf events!)

That bought a lump to my throat :)

Ditto the lump to my throat...:)
I fully respect your attitude to this and, as I'm sure our American cousins say on an hourly basis, you da man! :D

I'm beginning to think I should just stop looking, because as perfect beaters go... back on a bracelet and looking good :p

How/why did you beat your watch? Are you into extreme sports? Genuinely curious (and perplexed)! I mean, if you are engaged in anything which is likely to bash your ££££ watch, you will usually know well in advance, and it seems sensible and obvious to not wear it in the first place.

One thing I have realised. Sensible and a love for expensive watches, rarely go together and may even be an oxymoron. :)
