Dear TURF member,

Kindly take a moment to let us know your thoughts about the new layout any any features you would like to see here. We are still in the tweaking process of this forum and need your help to make it a better place for all of us to participate in. Criticism is just as welcome. We want to hear from you.

On the "old" TURF if a member didn't log out (like me)...they could be logged in for days(like me). Will this new site log a member out automatically upon closing?
Also, how do you specify an avatar? Plenty of info about an avatar but nothing on selecting one.

I kind of like the understated look of the older forum.... too many smileys available here which is just annoying when they are used in abundance.

Also, I beg of you, specify special rules for signature sizes... It's horrible when actual replies are hard to see because of massive animated gifs promoting bass fishing, your old army unit, your current army unit, your political views, your pets, bible passages, and my favourite, all of the above at once.... (just take a look over at WUS and that other rolex forum that uses this software aswell and you will see what a disaster it is).

All imho, but then I'm scandinavian and a fan of nice clean design.

Stryke
04-15-2009, 03:53 PM
I believe it will keep you logged in if you check the little remember me box but only when you come back. If you leave the site you will show as logged out until you revisit.

Triple7, we will keep it clean. For now will leave it up to members to use good judgement but if something becomes an eye sore it will be cut short.

Notice that in the marketplace there is a feedback section for transactions. Both good ad bad can go in there. :)

There are no avatars in the software so you need to upload your own. Just make sure the file size and dimensions are within the allowable limits.

And secondly, to the Members: hit us with any thoughts, ideas, suggestions you might have. And if you're having problems or questions about functions, let us know - this is very much a work in progress and we're all learning the new software, so please be patient with us! :)

The problem with this new interface it can be the amount of pictures, signature and stuff people can load. The most important part, which is the text, can become secondary and hard to read. It can end up looking like the dial on a Navitamer and we like clean looking dials, dont we??

Stryke
04-16-2009, 08:13 AM
Guys, I believe I have fixed the avatar issue, please try again. Also, the good news (and the reason many were having problems registering last night) is because SL has managed to import the user accounts from the old forum and I was just able to activate them all. Please try your old TURF udernam and password and see if you have been imported. If you are already registered here with it then it is fine but if you are getting a banned message or that the username already exists then it should work for you now to just log in. :)

Quick question. What are the scales for? What is Reputation?

Reputation is something you can give points for. If you like someone's points you can hit them with possitive rep and if not you can use negative rep. Comments from rep show up to the user in their user cp although it won't tell them who left it unless you sign your name to it.

Non registered users can see all the boards that you see however the OT section will only show them topic headers and if they try to click on a thread to read it they will have to register and log in.

I realise that I am very much a product of a different age, however, I still like clean, neat and tidy posts. The addition of photos at the top, smileys all the way through and worst of all some cleverly crafted, or otherwise, slogan/quotation at the bottom only detract from the bit wee all opened the page to look at.

For as long as I can remember, the original Turf and then our very own 21st century version of Turf attracted the very best of users and some wonderful characters, who could use humour combined with clever and inventive writing to express their thoughts in an intelligent way. Am I alone in thinking that the addition of photos etc on our posts is an actual dumbing down of the site which will not help us maintain the high quality of our users?

I could understand if we had a simple page, like we had previously, with a photo and comment at the bottom from a paying advertiser etc. With that we could read it or ignore it as we pleased and it would at least pay for some of the upkeep of this wonderful site.

As others pointed out earlier, pages can become too busy for old guys like me to focus on quickly and accurately.

Hi
I loved the old forum layout . Upon logging on, I could instantly see how many new messages there were to read and in what sub forum.
This software does not lend itself very well to that function. It's part of the reason i do not regularly visit the rolex forum

also, for anyone wanting to increase the number of posts that appear per page on a given thread, I believe one can change this in your personal settings. default is 10 posts per page. can be changed to display many more posts per page.

above all though, good move I say.

if there's a paypal address or something to send donations for hosting etc, please notify. I understand this software costs £££ per year.

I'm an old fart also ( given my not too brilliant computer skills ) in that I've managed to navigate myself back into this forum with new join date and postings count. Mainly I think because my original password was automated.
That's no problem really because my old count was low anyway, but I have noticed some of the established members like Harb and Rolexroz are "new" also.
I always take note of other members count "scores", especially for buying merchandise.

Also you will notice that forums with new posts have a blue Submariner to the left and those read have a black one. When entering a forum you will see unread threads are in bold and read threads are not.

ChrisEdu
04-18-2009, 11:56 AM
Like it with info on the left. Something I miss is being able to click on the little upwards arrow that took you back to the list of topics in any particular part of the forum. Now, I think we have to click on the thing at the top of the page - so much more effort! :)

Also want to say how much the appearnace has improved for taming the indicators for members' standing on the forum, e.g. Super Moderator, etc.. They were far too invasive before, imo. Now things look much neater and more professional - far more polished. :) Well done.

Just a thought, looking at the site from an accessability perspective, could there be a use of different colours than black and blue to identify areas that have / have not been updated, as the colours are quite similar? Maybe, a more pale colour would be better, due to increased contrast when used in partnership with the black face.

I dare say I have missed something, but does the new set up permit us to edit the original advert the way we used to. What I mean is, if I place an advert selling a NOS Rolex 5512 for 5k and then change my mind, following a huge intake of alcohol and drugs and decide to sell it for only £25 can I edit the advert.

I ask as there appears to be no way for me to edit one of my adverts to reduce the price on the original advert, only the one at the bottom of the thread.

However, as I have said before, I may well be very very wrong!

I have it set to allow you to edit your own posts for 24 hours I believe. This will prevent someone from ruining the integrity of a thread by deting their stuff from a while ago because they got upset over something. You can simply add a new post days later with the updated price or if it important for you to have it in the original one simply PM a moderator and ask them to do it. You can see a list of moderators in the "view forum leaders" link on the bottom of the hope page. :)

Are we to assume as non paying members we are at the mercy of the Hierarchy as to the set Topics and content allocated to us compared to the older board..?

The new board seems extremely quiet at present both from new posts, members online and also topics raised going unanswered.

Obvioulsy I realise this is not a commercial opperation and its been a very enjoyable place to find a seat for a number of years, I am sure I speak for quite a number just wondering ...

Its good to hear some positive feedback rather than a sarcastic answer to a reasonable question.

Ok , so maybe I/we have missed something . Forgive me if I am going over old ground.
Will the Good/Guys / Bad Guys reference forum be shifted into the new board?
I think not having a Funnies forum a great shame as it seemed to draw a good deal of traffic( bored board members! in need of a good laugh)
Also there are a few Forums missing from the new Board , obviously the older board will become redundant shortly for new posts so will it be there for eternity as a reference only medium or totally intergrated into the new board?
Maybe we can suggest other Forums / improvements as well??

Either that will be done or it'll be linked to the old board as an archive.

I think not having a Funnies forum a great shame as it seemed to draw a good deal of traffic( bored board members! in need of a good laugh)

Feel free to put whatever jokes you have in the OT Lounge. That's where we had them originally and we only created a Funnies board because one former member bombarded the forum with tons of jokes in a manner akin to spamming. Though there was no malicious intent, it pretty much knackered our OT Lounge so the Funnies board was created. Obviously, if we get the same issue happening here, a Funnies board may have to be made.

Also there are a few Forums missing from the new Board

Well, not really. We have the main Rolex section and Rolex Photo board as before but also a seperate Rolex resources/links board and a seperate Rolex Documents section.

There's the Non-Rolex board as before, but also a seperate Non-Rolex Resources/Links board.

No Vintage, admittedly, but there was relatively little traffic and so this can be discussed in the main Rolex board.

OT Lounge as before.
No Funnies, as discussed.
No Picture Gallery as this new software allows you to host pics in your own albums - which can be linked from a Thread in the OT Lounge, as geoff malter recently did with his Japan trip photos.
No GEMS - I'm sure we'll start this anew when we have some gems here...;)

How's that for a comprehensive rebuttal! :p :D

Maybe we can suggest other Forums / improvements as well??

Please do! That's what this Thread is here for! :)

First to Gil: great work in setting up the new Forum and getting things up and running so quickly.

And secondly, to the Members: hit us with any thoughts, ideas, suggestions you might have. And if you're having problems or questions about functions, let us know - this is very much a work in progress and we're all learning the new software, so please be patient with us! :)

Other than that, post away!! :D
Greetng Harb.

Truly enjoying the site. For a TURF rookie such as myself, is there a place where some of the commonly seen terms are explained (e.g. bump)? I searched the user guide and FAQ and was unable to find anything.

Thanks,
Matt

To "bump" simply means to post a comment to an existing thread and it will bump that thread up on the forum so it's fresh (so to speak) and on top again and easy to see and find. With time and no further posting a thread topic will drop to the bottom of a page and then to the second page eventually and so on, and so on.........

Unless there's some other kind of "bump" that only Harb knows about....... ;)
