Well, my search for the perfect beater seems to have come to an end - finally. I've been hunting (and flipping) to find a relatively cheap watch that I'll enjoy wearing when all things Rolex are consigned to the drawer, and I stumbled across this Glycine Combat Sub when I was on holiday.

Selling at just under £600 but picked up three months old for considerably less and in new condition I think this one is, at last, a keeper. Pics are courtesy of the seller on TZ and I hope he won't mind me reproducing them here as he did a fine job!

i like it BUT this is why i try to stick to Rolex...there are just TOO many watches and watch brands out there...and i cant have them all!

Believe me i tried but in the end sold nearly everything off... why do you need a non Rolex everyday watch when a Rolex is so tough?

I do have an Emergency and afew military type watches so i'm not 'having a go' i'm just curious. I intend to get down to just Rolex in the end [except will keep the Emergency for travel to rough locations].

Well, firstly because it's an excuse to buy other watches that I can actually afford; and secondly, because I don't like the notion of knocking my Rolexes about (as harb will testify).

Next up is a GMT II though :)

You're right, John, there is... and it's on my shopping list :)

Oh, and one on the wrist because I really do like it a lot...

Seems nice enough but there are literally tons of watches out there that are passably attractive and I'm going to have to agree with james.

BTW, do you still have the plastic covers on the sofa...?! ;)

Also, a "keeper"?!! Pull the other one! :):)

That was funny, harb, because I got the unedited version on my iPhone :D

In any event, I just like watches and can't afford to satisfy my craving with nothing but Rolex. Will that do? And no, I don't have covers on my sofas. I just don't let anyone sit on them :)

May concede the "keeper" point, though, as I was only this morning looking longingly at a Seiko Alpinist... had to buy a new tripod, though, so I'm trying to control myself!

Doh!! :) I thought it was perhaps a bit much...:)

When I was working in the Outer Hebrides on a work project I hired a holiday bungalow for a few weeks to get out of hotels, and the mattresses on the beds were still in plastic wrappers under the sheets! Maybe it says something about Hebridean continence...

Actually, I should have updated this thread.

Harb, you were - of course - quite correct. The Glycine is no more, replaced with the beauty below :o

As for beaters, I've just got a Casio bargain from Argos, which you'll find here (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/2830704/Trail/searchtext%3EGREAT%20DEALS%20ON%20MENS%20WATCHES.h tm?storeId=10001&referredURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.argos.co.uk%2Fstatic% 2FProduct%2FpartNumber%2F2830704%2FTrail%2Fsearcht ext%3EGREAT+DEALS+ON+MENS+WATCHES.htm&jspStoreDir=argos&_%24ja=tsid%3A11674|prd%3A1546795&referrer=COJUN&cmpid=COJUN). Not bad for <£20, eh?

Cool pic, Tony.

Hopefully you're not going to delete it like all the other ones that have made this Thread pretty useless :(

Sorry harb - it wasn't intentional but my Photobucket account was becoming unmanageable so I had to create some sub-folders. I'll endeavour to re-link them now as I have a few minutes.

And done. I'll now go and stand outside the headmaster's office :D

I like your pics (even if those ones weren't yours!) and the Thread looks much better for having them!

You were quite right, I should have remembered that some links would be broken.

I'm going to post something later regarding the evolution of my watch collection, as this morning I managed to nab something I've been after for a while (don't tell anyone, but it's a Seiko Marine Master SBDX001). I also got a genuine beater in the guise of a £20 (well, from £40 RRP) Casio that I actually won't mind - and may even enjoy - knocking about.

It's taken a long time to understand what I want (and need) from my watches, and the only thing left is a nice dress watch. It'll probably be back to Rolex for that one, but I'm still in the planning phase.

More later :)

Actually, harb, it was a good idea to re-link the photos because I've bought the Glycine back again

Too nice a watch to let it go!
