View Full Version : The 'Perceived' Heirarchy of Certain Swiss Watches

Overheard this conversation the other day amongst some co-workers...it sounded like one of those 'one-upsmanship' debates, the irony being that none of the individuals even owned one of these particular makes!*LOL*

Apparently & accordingly to these experts on bon vivant, the 'Big Three' of Swiss watchmakers are the Vachon Constantin, Patek Philippe & Audemars Piguet. *sounds reasonable but no major epiphany*

The 'second tier' in their opinion is comprised of Rolex, Breitling, Omega & Tag Heuer...classic sport watches prized for their durability & good looks.

Everything else is apparently an 'also ran'.

Felt compelled to interupt/interject their somewhat insipid conversation by adding that all of this is meaningless unless one actually owns one or has paid for the periodic upkeep.

Kind of like rating luxury automobiles by simply reading a magazine...perhaps those esoteric timepiece periodicals have something to do with this.

And brands like JLC and Breguet are then assumedly (gag) ...at some level under Breitling, TAG and Omega? Or maybe brands they hadn't heard of...

100% agree. I was going to post just that, but I was still reeling from reading the OP

Not at all. One can easily have a valid opinion about these items by educating oneself from the massive amount of information that is now available from many avenues; this very forum being such an example.

Paying for the upkeep, buying, or even having been given one of these timepieces as a present may, in some cases, afford an added dimension to ones knowledge-base - it does not, however, preclude the opinions of those not in that position.

Clearly their "insipid conversation" was interesting enough for you to eavesdrop. It was probably a good thing you didn't interject - the logic upon which you base your prejudices is so shaky that you would have quickly been hoist with your own petard.
