I was in my AD on Saturday, while her indoors was doing some Christmas shopping. I try not to get too involved in Christmas shopping.

I was looking at the Zenith Striking 10th. There is no doubt that I love this watch. It is utterly magnificent in every way. I intend to try and have a deal to buy it. No, I never just go in and hand over my debit card. I would be happy to buy the watch at a worth the money price. Defining what I mean by "worth the money" is quite easy. It means a sum of money which, if I were to sell the watch in the next 10 years or so (Which I almost certainly never will) would be (at least in the ball park) re-couped.
Sometimes, such an equation is a no brainer. EG, buying a new, or nearly new Rolex sports watch in stainless . Sometimes it takes a little more work and research. EG buying a nearly new JLC or a nearly new/ new precious metal Rolex.
However, where do you even start , to try and ascertain a value on a limited edition watch, applauded by WIS's everywhere, made by an extremely respected maker, who's watches often struggle to acheive over 50% of MRP, even when new.
Do we take it out of the normal equation of that manufacturers watches, because it is special.
These are the problems

1 It is a Zenith
2 There is one in the window of most Zenith AD's
3 Though it is limited, it is limited to 1969 examples (That is quite a lot)

Where do you start.
MRP is £7000 for the watch in SS with a Ally strap

My guess is that S/H in around 3 to 5 it will make 3 to 4 K

So that is what I would really like to pay.
That is never going to happen. So, maybe I will have to wait for a few other people to buy them first and then either get fed up, or need the money back a bit sharpish, which does happen.

What do you all think?

Oh, here are some pics of the striking 10th

That's one of the beauties of Rolex, the resale. I once bought a breitling, at 50% discount, I didn't really wear it much so decided to sell a few years later, it was a real struggle even though the watch was mint.

Yes I got my money back, but it took a very long time. A zenith will be the same, I would wait until you can get deal.

My guess is that secondhand now it may make 3 to 4k...

So I really want to be giving around £4500 for one.

I will see what i can bully my AD into. Failing that I will be in the far east in the spring, I might get more sense there, who knows.

It is sure that not all watches can be bought with the relaxed abandon that Rolex's can.
Surely this is testimony to Rolex marketing strategy. Who was moaning about their price increases and stern treatment of dealers? Not me. :)

Isn't Zenith typically discounted pretty steeply upfront? I know that was the case when I was looking at a Chronomaster several years ago...perhaps it's different for a "limited edition"? I do see them from fairly reputable online dealers at between $7500-$8000, which at current exchange would be at or under £5000.

I think it is true, what you say. Certainly substantial discounts are normal on Zenith.

If I can buy one at £4500, I will buy one. I think it would be a wonderful watch to own. I am very taken with it.

I will talk to my AD in the next week or two and see what happens.

Beautiful. And at £4.5k it has to be worth buying, because I can't imagine you'd be looking at too much of a loss should you sell (which I'm sure you won't).

These Zeniths are beginning to do my head in.
