Are you asking specifically about vintage or modern?

Regarding vintage collections, I'd put my money on Mike Wood.

The Mondani collection which went to auction around 2007 consisted of 300 Rolex watches.

Many of them were rare models.

His books are based on photos from his own collection.

Antiquorum did the selling.

I would say the Mondani should also be ranked amongst the experts, perhaps not "The" expert.

I don't like the word "expert"... "ex" = something that "was", a has-been; and "spurt" = something that started out as a drip and got worse :p

I far prefer "specialist", reasonably extensive knowledge, and always happy to admit to one's own limitations and a willingness to learn :)

I am priveleged to own a fairly extensive collection of vintage Rolexes ;), but I am very sure there are many collectors who could blow me out of the water without trying. Philipp Stahl, a watch dealer and jeweller in Maastricht, has a very comprehensive vintage collection; Tokyo/London based watch dealer Shigeharu Aritake has a rumoured 800 vintage Rolex plus other quality vintage watches , and there are many other "off-the-radar" collectors who don't play on the internet with extensive collections.

However, many "old school" collectors built their collections before the watch boom... anyone assembling a serious collection even today would need a lot of patience, perseverence, and very deep pockets!!

Hi Mike

Well put. Totally agree.

Today to build any kind of Rolex watch collection would need deep pockets indeed.

There's a guy on the TZ forum who would not be impeded by any false modesty in advancing his claim to such a distinction. He runs his little fiefdom with an iron hand and brooks no views that run counter to his own.

Always the problem with half learned guys.

They think they know it all. The guy you are referring to is well known and best avoided.

who are you referring to? I thought TZ was run by JD who seems to know his vintage quite well... But I dont visit the forum anymore though, too many muppets.

Who is an expert and who owns the most Rolex watches are different subjects. I'd put my money on James Dowling as one of the top experts around.
