Chaps,
After reading the "which Rolex is best on a strap", I have given thought to buying a vintage Rolex. Essentially, I like the idea of a 1973 DD in gold on a brown strap. Maybe I could get such a watch for £3,000?
Why 1973? It's my year of birth.
On the other hand, maybe I should get a Sub or a GMT? This is because I am missing a diver's style watch in my tiny collection. I have a 5 year old black dial SS Daytona, a 6 year old white dial Explorer II and a quartz Longines Presence, gold case, brown leather strap which is 17 years old, bought for me on my 18th birthday.
So.......for a 1973 Rolex, I reckon it's a 1803 DD in gold, silver or white dial with brown leather strap (if such a watch was ever built then), or a Sub/GMT II from the same year.
But how much do these things cost, fully serviced and mint? Obviously not interested in comedy expensive, rare special editions. Not a rich man, me.
Many thanks.

Hi Hopskipjump

IMHO the DD in 18K Gold still commands a fairly good price. The 3000 pounds would a great buy.

Japan they go for $5,000 for a 1970's range model. So not far off from your budget.

Hope you find a good one. Post photos when it's on your wrist.

Thanks mate. How much are 1973 Subs roughly?

Thanks mate. How much are 1973 Subs roughly?

Depends which Sub, a 5513 from 1973 should be easy to come by and cost less than the DD. On the other hand, a 1973 1680 is in the Red Sub time frame and will cost more than the DD. Just the serial number on a 1680 from 1973 will command a premium, regardless if it has a red or white font.
