Hi,
My first post. I am a watch enthusiast currently based in continental Europe. New to the forum and new forum (I don't own one yet!). Current collection includes Breitling, Omega, Breguet, Damasko and a few others.
I think my first foray into the world of Rolex will be a 14060(M) No Date, and this leads me into my first question!
What do people consider to be the wiser buy? A pre COSC 2 liner (2007 and earlier I think) or the more recent, and currently produced, COSC with the "Rolex" ring round the dial. I must confess to being torn as I prefer the simplicity of the 2 line non cosc dial, but also like the "Rolex" ring on the current piece! Are there any technical advantages of the COSC movement?
Cheers,
Stephen
COSC is just a certification from an independent organization, that the movement has gone through tests based on their definition of a "Chronometer".
You actually pay extra money from that.

As one of the other respondents pointed out COSC is just a certification the movement are the same unlike the Submariner 5512 and 5513 one had 31 jewels the other 25. I think it end up being a a personal choice may have a small bearing if you sell the watch at some point some collectors /purchasers get “hung up” on the chronometer certification do what make you feel happy.

The "wiser" buy would be the one you like the best. I personally don't like the COSC writing on the dial because I think it looks silly.
Anyway, as it happens, the movements are exactly the same.
Hi Stephen,
Welcome to TURF and congrats on your first post here! :)
Like the others have said, there's really no technical advantage to one movement over the other. Even non-COSC movements leave Rolex well within the -4/+6 COSC specs.
So, as wust said, the wiser choice would be the one you like best! :)
Although you don't have a Rolex (yet....;)) you clearly are one a bit of a watch fanatic...why don't you post a pic of your collection?
And I predict it won't be long before you're showing us your new Rolex addition...;)

I have the Non COSC 14060M , and of the many watches that I own and have owned , the Non COSC certified watch has been the most accurate!
All have been within COSC norms but the ND Sub has been 1/2 second off/day!

5512 and 5513 had essentially the same movement with 26? jewels.

The 14060M has the same movement as the Explorer which is chronometer certified.
Going back to the question, I prefer the older, less-writing dial - just looks cleaner and nicer in my opinion.
Perhaps the new one will be a better collector's watch but I would still buy whichever one you personally prefer the look of.
Interestingly, the 5513 even came in a 17-jewel configuration in the U.S. in the 1960s so that Rolex USA could circumvent the import duty on watches with more than 17 jewels in the movement. The later ones, of course, had the same jewel count as the rest of the world.

Thanks for the input fellas, and the warm welcome! Looks like I had been fed some wrong info by a dealer on the movements, now that I know it is indeed the only the certification and cosmetic differences I will follow my heart ...... or probably just get a 2 liner and a new 4 liner and save the brain ponding :)
As for pictures, well my latest Breitling is awaiting collection from a Dealers safe, its a 24H Chrono-matic, but heres the one thats made way for it:

Stephen, I must confess I didn't mention in my previous reply that I've got one of the Non-Cosc 14060M's. It certainly has a clean unpretentious looking dial.
Best of luck with your choice.

There will be no shortage of suggestions for your future Rolex collection, because that is what happens; it all starts with one little watch, several years and probably a divorce later you will have a nasty Rolex habit.
And should you ever need any photographic tips than Alanski is our resident expert!
