Hi,

I'm been toying with the idea of getting an all gold sports rolex, prob a sub or GMTIIC, It's weird but I really like the idea of a mechanical watch being made of a precious metal such as gold. The only thing holding me back is that it is a bit flash (and the price)...I even sometimes feel funny about wearing my TT GMTIIC. Also my girlfriend keeps saying I'm too young for a gold watch (i'm only 28). What are peoples experiences about wearing all gold watches as an everyday watch. I'll have to move on my Sub LV and the TTGMTIIC.

Help much appreciated

Mike

Michael - the only gold watch I have is my Patek and I have no concerns about wearing it as an everyday watch.

But if by "everyday" you mean all day/night, every day and for all activities, then my PP would be kept safely away.

Sure, an 18k Rolex sports model will ultimately be more prone to gouges/dings than a SS version. However, I believe that in real-world practical terms it would be able to take anything you throw at it.

"Flash"?? To some people any Rolex is "flash".

Other people's opinions of whether or not you should get one betray a prejudice and an agenda which you should not let have any bearing on your decision. Ignore them and do what you want.

I look forward to seeing the pics...
(...and undoubted wrist shot when your girlfriend decides that she wants to wear your watch...;))

Well everyday is quite a loose term...I like to think I look after my watches so any chance of it getting dinged and it's off....so no gym, no nights out on the piss...stuff like that, dam I even take my watch off when washing up the dishes!!

My other two watches would have to make way for the gold bad boy so just trying to think i'd get more enjoyment from the 1 gold than my current 2.

As for my girlfriend wanting to wear it I dunno...the watch prob weighs as much as her arm (she's only tiny)

cheers
mike

p.s. If there is anyone in London that fancies moving their gold gmtiic or sub 16618 at a special turf price get in touch.

I went gold a couple of years ago but also have s/s & tt rolex watches as the gold watch "IMHO" is just to soft a meterial to use every day at work and play.
As for the age thing its like harb said its your call ignore what others say.:)

I have a vendor who wears an all gold black face Sub. He says it's THE watch he's always wanted. He's in his mid to late 40s, it looks good on him...and it does catch the eye.

IMO, black is classy, blue is bling. Right, Harb? ;)

Have you considered white gold?

The WG subdate is a very good choice.

Agree!
You know that its WG, but everyone elso thinks it is SS. No bling factor at all!

Went round westend today checking out the gold subs...they are quite a lot out there...annoyingly though didn't see a black face 16618 which is ideally want I want. Have managed to track down a blue face gold sub, 2000 model for £7,750...is that a good price? Comes with all boxes and papers. Thing is I do think the blue face is just a tad too much...black I reckon is a bit more classy. How much would a dial and bezel insert change cost? Seen the new. Ceramic ones which look great but are out my budget.

My opinion.........hold off until you find what you want.....a black face sub fairly priced.

One gold rolex I would consider is the 16718 GMT master, with brown bezel and brown dial... stunning and very unusual. The only gold sub i really like is the new white gold ceramic.

Spot on, geoff! :)

Thing is there are no black face ones around. Rolex London will only change the dial with a service...so looking around £600 all in.

Does anyone know when Rolex changed from hollow centre links to solid centre links on the gold sub bracelets?

Cheers

I have many gold watches including Sub's, GMT's and YM's and am turning 32 shortly but I got many of them in my mid 20's. No such thing as too young. Get it and enjoy. :)

Ditto that! :)

Mike - send a PM to Rolexroz and Morgan. They should be able to source one for you.
And, like I said, I look forward to seeing the pics...:)

Had a proper look at another one yesterday, first time I've actually tried one on. The gold is a lot more subtle in real life than in pictures...that or I'm just getting used to it.

Think I've managed to source a good second hand one...just trying to iron out the details.

will post pics ASAP.

I have a day/date that I never wear because my wife says it makes me look like an old man. She does like the gold Daytona but again prefers my stainless to the gold. I am now 38.

If you want to wear it every day and don't want it to get noticed, white gold is a good bet.

Wear a long sleve shirt and don't worry about it.

My wife says the same about day dates. But she is ok with a day date white gold oyster bracelet with domed bezel.
Perhaps I should get one of those.... Or just tell her to **** off and mind her own business. I'll let you know when I have decided.
