I finished building this a few weeks ago. All Aussie parts, contracted to New Zealand dated 1964 on an INCH U.S. made receiver. She's very sweet. Enjoy.

The Indian army used the FAL from the early 60's to the late 90's as well. I have fired that weapon on numerous occassions! It kicks like a mule!
I had a bruised shoulder after going through 5 magazines on Semi Auto mode.

That looks a lot like a 7.62 'SLR'

Just behind the sight is a knurled roller. You adjust the amount of gas 'back pressure' used to re-cock. If that is set too high you get even more recoil caused by the mechanics thumping back into your sholder.
Too little and it jams - too much and you get a bruised sholder. Trick is to get it just right. When the gun is clean you can set it just under half way and you can shoot al day. Although when the sh*t hits the fan you don't want it jamming on you so wind it right up and to heck with the bruises.
Gotta say, Tom - for a gun guy, I'd have expected you to be a better shot.
I mean, you've managed to hit everywhere else on that board except the targets!! ;)

Obviously, the targets are too costly to risk damaging! :)

Talking of hitting target - they're not all that accurate.
Just above and in front of the trigger is where the body breaks/opens so you can get inside to service it. That joint can get pretty floppy side-to-side meaning the whole gun bends in the middle. OK, it's fine up to say 300 yards or so but once you get over that range it's pretty hit or miss

The one I fired was a standard issue Army SLR , so I'm guessing it was set to maximum

Looking at that the memories come flooding back.
Many people don't know this but just on the front surface of the grip is a little panel with a screw. You can remove the panel and folder the trigger guard down into the grip - Used when you're wearing mittens in arctic conditions - I guess you guys in the Idian army never had need for that one. LOL

You've also left the safety catch off in the picture - naughty naughty.

You know morg? The Dutch had their own variant. Some guys here build clones but the parts, the actual Dutch parts that make them different are next to impossible to find and so very expensive.
Here's my German manufactured, then given to Turkey to beat the snot out of, G1 FAL...............

I think the original design was Belgian - Of course I could be wrong. The british took them up big-time in the 60's and 70's before doing what they do best which is to flog them all to everyone's enemies (including britain's) in the 80's.

They were originally Belgian, yes. FN Herstal. And America even toyed with the design in the late 50's also as the T-48. But we went with the M14.
The rifle was at one time (for a long time) the "Right Arm of the Free World" adopted by something like 93 countries.

I know I'm old but M14 was way before my time.
We're talking 70's here - most common US weapon I ever saw GI's carrying would be an Armalite somewhere alongs the lines of an Armalite (M16).
I think most of them are now in hole in the ground in Ulster.

Hi Tom,
While we are on the subject of firearms, where are all the small pistol primers. There are many manufacturers, Winchester,Remington, CCI, Wolf, Federal and Magtech to name a few and nobody on the retail end has any. I looked on Gun Broker and primers are selling for almost $400 per 5000.

I saw some clips in youtube from "real" footage on how a barret .50 was taking apart some taliban in the mountains, brutal! (Canadian Snipers)

No no, I can GET one, I just can't send it to you!! I thought that was what you said, get YOU one. :D
Of course, "they" do currently want to ban them, those easily available, oh so common $8000 rifles. Good ammo is about $10 per round.

$8000 is a price I would pay to own it. The US should make a donation of those barret to every single vessels crusing the coast of Somalia.

They would make fast work of a Terr's (er' I mean pirate's) dinghy!! I agree, merchant ships should be armed at least enough to repel these jerks.
OK, I'll get you one in the mail right away (not).
Sorry........

I am reading specification for the 98B and it looks like a great long range rifle. I wonder how it will performe for hunting big game at long distance , 300 +
It costs $ 4500 .
For that money and for big game hunting would you go for it or you will be going for a proper rifle?
Sharkman
04-20-2009, 05:02 PM
I mean proper "hunting" rifle.
Tom Nikolai
04-20-2009, 07:09 PM
I am thinking that .50 cal is a tad "overkill" for most big game hunting. Maybe a bull elephant, maybe.
I'll stick with .308, 30-06 or even the old .30-30.

$8000 is what one would pay for a 32 Mauser or Walther in India. India banned the import of civilian firearms in 1980 , so whatever guns are there in the country are the ones being passed around.
Gun ownership in India is legal, but very difficult. One has to show real reason for ownership and even then imported good quality guns are very expensive and we are restricted to .32
One can get a Webley Type revolver made by the local ordnance factory but from what I read, Its far more useful to throw it at an attacker than fire it.
Let me share a statistic with you, The city of Bombay has 20 Million people and 14000 licenced firearm owners. Thats 0.07 % of the population.

Officially not over 200 per Licence per year.
The ones that the Pakistanis send over is a different matter
