Had one of my best rides tonight, despite the conditions lending themsleves to it being horrible.

Went for a ride in a local woodland. As I arrived, it started to rain, but I decided to go ahead anyway. The trail was very wet and muddy, to the extent that in some places my wheels were getting completely bogged down, making it impossible to ride.

As I continued my ride, the rain get heavier and became a thunder storm! It was great fun! Really exhilerating! I hadn't had as much fun on a bike since I was a child. Yes, I got soaked and covered in mud; I even managed one of my clipped-in dismounts, but it was really fun!

I'm really starting to enjoy getting out on my bike. When I got home, I then did a further 20 minutes on the rowing machine! :)

I'm not sure that you should get a posh bike like yours dirty:)
You need a ratbike for riding and a smart bike for polishing and bragging!!:D:D

I know exactly what you mean.

I don't suppose it's peculiar to cycling, although "mucking about on a bike" is almost unique in taking you back to childhood freedom, with the emphasis on "freedom" (and fun). (Mucking about in boats comes close, but without the exercise :))

Even on days when you don't really feel much like going out - if you get over the reluctance and make the effort, you can really lift your spirits and change your whole outlook and energy levels.

I guess you and Harb understand the body chemistry that comes into play during exercise - it certainly works!

I agree, I feel much better after a ride on my bike. Somehow riding can become a bit addictive both in the enjoyment area and also body chemistry-wise. (I believe it's endorphin release) Maybe the medics would like to educate us engineers a bit.
I must say Chris that you are sounding much, much better and starting to enjoy life again. keep it up!!:D

Thanks folks!

Yes, I'm certainly starting to enjoy things more, although, my biggest problem is getting the motivation and energy to do things. A lot of the time my head just feels like it's full of custard!

Nothing beats getting good and muddy on a moutain bike! I really have a blast, and you're right! You do feel like a kid again!

On occasion I ride with a friend and he can't stand being out in the rain or mud. His loss.

I guess that some might say it's a freedom comparable to dancing naked in the rain! :D
