I was fortunate enough to be able to gift myself this lovely Patek Philippe 3796R (rose gold).  I purchased it pre-owned and it came complete with boxes and papers.  I always wanted this particular Calatrava model.  For me, it represents the end of the line of the Calatravas that began with the classical Ref. 96 from the 1930s.  When I began collecting watches, I thought it would be neat to have a vintage Ref. 96, then, several years ago, I thought to myself that the modern version of the Ref. 96 in the form of the 3796 would be a better choice for everyday wear.  I now have one of my grail watches.  I'm very pleased.

The caseback.  For those not familiar with this model, the caseback is satin (line) finished as are the sides of the case.  The rest of the head and bezel are highly polished.  And the lugs have lug holes like the classic Ref. 96 model--makes strap changes and case cleaning easy.  The subsequent Calatrava models, the 5096 and 5196, do not have lug holes.

Beautiful watch, Lon!  Enjoy it.  I really like the simplicity of the dial. Wear it in good health.

The brushed sides and polished bezel give a very noticeable contrast, leading the eye to the classical shape, the epitome of Bauhaus design.

It's a beautiful watch, Lon (but then I would say that... ;-)) - wear it in great health :-)

Your 3796R and its grandson, my 5196J - now that's a family resemblance! :-)

Parent - By Manatee Date 2007-01-03 15:46
They look almost identical.

It's so tempting. :-)
Parent - By harb (Moderator) Date 2007-01-03 16:14
The 5196 is 6mm bigger at 37mm.

Some purists bemoan the fact that by keeping the same size movement yet increasing the case size leaves the sub-second dial too close to the centre.
Personally, I disagree.

This is a wonderfully understated design - I think you should go for it, Peter.
Parent - By Manatee Date 2007-01-03 19:10
I'd like it in a 34 or 35, please. ;-)
Parent - By harb (Moderator) Date 2007-01-04 09:41 Edited 2007-01-04 09:48
That'd be the 5096 - 33mm, but a strangely familiar design...;-)
This model also has a display back.

The 5096s are nice!

Note the appearance and gradual development of the marker at 6'o'clock through the generations.
