  • Double reason Rolex

Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on your perspective, my wife's birthday is only a couple of days before the end of the year. This year, I decided to make a special night of the event, so I booked a restaurant we had been to several times before. For those who are vegetarian, best stop reading now...........

The restaurant specialises in exotic food - think a slightly milder version of the bush tucker trials of "I'm a celebrity".

After a Kir Royal to get things going, Mrs bfltd0 chose Sumer Nights as her starter - being pan-fried chermoula crickets, quinoa, spinach and dried fruit. I went for the Serengeti Strut - crispy zebra "jerky", carrot & ginger fluid gel and biltong soil. See? Told you it was exotic.

Main courses were: (her) Saigon Seduction - Massaman chicken two ways, almond butter with roasted cashews and cucumber pickle, accompanied by a love-bug salad (me) Oudtshoorn Patram - Ostrich tenderloin steak, mixed peppercorn sauce, twice baked blue potato and Asian caesar salad, accompanied by a side of pickled ratatouille.

With just enough space for a dessert, the Mrs had a Medieaval Hive - brown butter ice cream, honey & butter caramel sauce and a baby bee. I went for a Bushman’s Cavi-Err - caramel mealworms, bilinis, coconut cream and vodka jelly.

All washed down with a bottle of Malbec from Chile.

Here are some pics of the food.

    The two preparations of chicken:

The bug salad. Salad with bugs on the side!

    Ostrich tenderloin - lovely!

The chicken! Yes, those are bugs! Ostrich tenderloin - perfect

And as a nice touch, the waiter found out there was a birthday involved, so had the chef make up a chocolate "happy birthday". Nice surprise!

And then came the time for the birthday present....................I have previously posted on our trip to Portugal in September and while we were in a Rolex dealer in Lisbon, the Mrs remarked favourably on a particular 31mm SS/YG Datejust. So after a bit of tracking down, I obtained one of these (from Mark Worthington Jewellers - excellent service) in unworn, stickered BNIB condition with box and papers dated.....September 2017. After a little bit of unboxing at the table, the Rollie made its entrance. The standard Oyster bracelet was far too long, so it could not be worn that evening.

However, the next day we passed a watch shop that was pleased to take out 4 links so the beast would fit. This model has the green dial and the VI is picked out in diamonds, whereas the rest of the hour markers are applied Latin numerals.

So there we have it - a combined Christmas/birthday present which was exactly what she wanted, but equally didn't expect!

      And the traditional wrist shot:

Bushtucker juice aside that's a lovely looking watch! Please pass on Happy Brithday wishes from S and me!

(As for the "food", I'm just too much of a wimp to even look at that!)

          Wine: remember 1982..................

Yes it is nice and will do.

"Wimp" hardly describes the man who destroyed Rodizio Rico's profit margin single-handedly one evening.....................

Oi, you bastard! You told me that there was a special birthday near the end of the year. You promised a lovely meal and big surprise. And what did I get!? Nothing!!!

Oh! You were on about your wife! D'oh! There I was starting to think you were a bit of a wrist tease!

Nice watch, not so sure about the food! Perhaps, I skip that place when we come up in a few weeks.

My very first luxury watch was a 26mm lady DJ for the wife and I’ve never looked back. Congrats!

Food: whatever floats your boat and it clearly does if you've been several times before!

Lovely watch. MW is a good guy. Haven't dealt with him for almost a decade but he was nothing short of a gent when I last did a deal with him

Food looks great, and so does the watch.

The Rodentwoman's birthday is 7 Jan. We have a coupon for 10 chicken nuggets and fries for $3 at Burger King. We're counting the days. Maybe even put a crowbar to my wallet and buy a soft drink to share.

And here is a much better shot of the actual watch in question. It is a Model 178243.

I don't normally like roman numerals, but they look great on this watch. Very nice.
